Plus-size model Ashley Graham does it all; body activist, runway diva, and lingerie designer. She walked the runway in her exclusive Black Orchid plus size lingerie line, which she created with Canadian brand Addition Elle back in 2013. Audience members used the hashtag #IAmSexySize when posting about the show on social media.
After being discovered at age 12 while shopping at the mall, Ashley went on to do commercial work to runway modeling and acting. She is most recognized for her work as a model for Lane Bryant’s #PlusIsEqual campaign. Clients have also included Target, Hanes, Bloomingdale’s, Evans, Simply Be, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Elomi Lingerie, Old Navy and many more. This year, she was the first plus size model to be featured in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The Swimsuits for All ad carried the tagline “If you got it, flaunt it.” Ashley did just that.
Ashley is an activist who speaks to high schools students about body image and confidence. From her TED talk to her interview on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, she emphasizes the importance of loving yourself. This has led to her becoming a founding member of ALDA, promoting a healthy body image for women. Most recently, Ashley has been a involved with the Themba Foundation, an organization that helps children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa.
“I feel amazing (about being a role model)! I mean I think there’re not enough celebrities out there talking about fat roles and cellulite and being a woman who has what society calls imperfections, and I’m happy to be that woman. I’m happy to embrace the women around me and encourage other women to feel comfortable in their skin no matter age, race, or size. I think there’s a generation that we really need to start talking to and it’s the younger generation.” – Ashley Graham, Elle Magazine
