HOW TO DRESS THE HOURGLASS FIGURE

Tags: Style Syllabus

We all come in a wide range of different shapes and no two bodies are the same, but here we explore the traditional “hourglass” body shape and how to dress it. This means your bust and hips are well balanced and you have a beautifully defined waist.

Even though the hourglass is an attractive and incredibly versatile shape for designers to play with, many haven’t moved beyond the straight size physique of the industry’s standard model. Finding the right balance for the hourglass can be challenging, especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for in your fashion choices.

Before you head out on your next shopping spree, make a note of some of our favorite styling tips for the hourglass figure. You’ll thank us later!

Go for Balance

Balancing your top half by accenting your shoulders, bust and waist highlights your figure and emphasizes your curves in a very flattering way. Go for tops and dresses that nip at the waist and avoid any large or masking details along your bust to make your naturally lovely proportions stand out from other aspects of your figure. A slight flare to the pant also elongates your body.

Choose Fabrics Wisely

Some fabrics flatter and others naturally detract from your figure. Lightweight knits, cottons and linen show off your figure without adding extra bulk or being uncomfortable to wear. Avoid thick fabrics like brocade and fleece that add a lot of bulk and mask your natural waistline.

Opt for Shaping

Shaped jackets, blouses and dresses naturally highlight your waist and make your bust and hips appear in flattering proportions. Consider the shape of your clothing and the closures for your jackets and tops. A well-placed dart can make a world of difference.

Wrap It Up

Wrap style dresses and tops are particularly flattering as they accent your waist without adding a lot of extra bulk. You can find a variety of dresses in everything from jersey materials to lightweight cotton gauze that are breezy, comfortable and flattering.

A Solid Choice

Solids tend to flatter the hourglass, as they naturally let the gaze fall on all of your highlightable features.  If you do want to get in on the spring floral trend or something equally as pretty. Try choosing smaller patterns that look feminine but not detract from your shape.
