Sure, just the thought of fractions in high school math made us want to snooze, but those simple principles are at the core of our favorite fashion trick. Listen up, ladies, because “fashion fractions” are about to change fashionably your life. Sure, just the thought of fractions in high school math made us want to snooze, but those simple principles are at the core of our favorite fashion trick.
Two fractional faves—¾ to ¼—are all you need to know to look your best, no matter what. Here’s the rule:
Your head-to-toe look must always be split into two parts, your “1/4” and your “3/4.”
Confused? Let’s examine: you’ve chosen an awesome black crepe pencil skirt to the knee. You pop on your favorite top and tuck it in. Now look in the mirror—your skirt takes up 50% of the outfit, and the tucked in top the other 50%. They’re equally weighted and own an equal section of your look.
And you look shorter, wider and definitely not put together. Now what?
Apply the fashionable fractions and let one “own” 1/4 of your look and the other ¾s. Switch the tucked-in top for a flowy tunic that hits mid-thigh—3/4 of your outfit—leaving a bit of your skirt peeking through, or about ¼ of the look. You’re slimmed. You’re elongated. You’re pulled-together, chic, sleek and look amazing.
THAT’S Fashion Fractions.
Want another classic example? Take a great fitting pair of jeans. Grab a shorter top and pull on a crop jacket. Now we’ve got the ¾ on the bottom and the ¼ on the top. Here’s what it looks like in two different looks.
Do you see how the shorter top actually created the illusion of a tiny waist and the ¾ bottom created super long legs?
Another common hiccup? Capri pants. Here’s what it can look like if you’ve chosen a tunic and cropped pants. With this 50/50 look, she looks top AND bottom heavy. It was a good attempt at a monotone-lengthening look that failed.
Switch out that top for a shorter top and watch what happens. She looks sleeker, longer and hotter. Just by choosing a shorter cut top you have now created an illusion that works.
It’s so simple to go to the paper bag look when we’re having a bad day. But, actually accentuating what we’ve got, taking a moment to do some Fashion Fractions will really add up to a fantastic ensemble that looks and feels great.
