What should be in every plus-size woman’s closet? Start with these essential wardrobe staple pieces and begin building your perfect closet!

1. Dark Wash Jeans

Dark to medium washes look best on curvy figures. Lighter shades tend to highlight imperfections, but darker or deeper shades add a slimming effect. So when you’re out jean shopping what exactly do you need to look for? You want to pick the best cut that flatters your body. Also, remember spandex is your friend! Denim that has a slight stretch to it will offer better control and hold its shape longer. You know you’ve found the perfect fit when nothing gapes, puckers, pulls, or tugs.

2. White Dress Shirt

A crisp white shirt is chic and fashionable. It can be dressed up for a professional look or dressed down for something more casual. A white button-down dress shirt is slimming under a blazer for work and can be sexy when unbuttoned a bit lower and paired with a nice camisole, statement necklace, and jeans for the weekend. When picking a white dress shirt the quality of the fabric is what’s important. Choose something that is sturdy with a little bit of stretch for maximum comfort.

3. Black Two-Piece Suit

Your wardrobe is not complete without a great black two-piece suit. When purchasing this wardrobe essential you should always think quality, not quantity. A good quality suit will last a really long time in your closet and having black suit will give you versatility because black can go with everything. Suits can actually be a great investment because you can wear each piece separately and get a lot of use out of a single suit. Pair you suit with a crisp white shirt to complete an overall professional look. While the classic tailored look never goes out of style, you could also add a few shirts that incorporate ruffles, short sleeves, fun prints, or a nice bold color to mix things up.

4. Pencil or A-Line Skirt

These two types of skirts are just must haves because they are universally the most flattering on everyone. If you carry weight on the bottom, a simple A-line skirt that falls just below the knee to mid-calf will balance out your overall silhouette and create an hourglass shape. For a wider midsection, a pencil skirt that starts at the natural waist and hits at the knee worn with a blouse that has movement will also create the same affect.

5. Shapewear

Shapewear is a must have ladies! They suck you in, minimize lumps and bumps, and create a smooth foundation for your clothing. Since our bodies change throughout the month, a variety of sizes might be a good idea. Remember, nothing should dig in or leave marks. Shapewear isn’t made for you to feel uncomfortable so make sure you have the right size for the right fit. Shapewear has come a long way and comes in many different styles which means you can choose a specific shapewear item for your specific needs. You want material that’s comfortable and has good memory. It should confirm to your shape, not force you into that shape. You do not want rolling up at the edges so be sure to try everything on. Lightweight fabrications that blend spandex and nylon are the best.
