Since the wardrobe scope on her hit show Orange is the New Black is limiting to say the least, you might never know Danielle Brooks is becoming a fashion icon. When not sporting a tan jumpsuit and being the prison comedian as “Taystee” she is a red carpet icon, named one of the 50 most stylish New Yorkers, and a Fashion Week front row attendee. Her go to style is bold patterns and accessories that make a statement wherever she goes, on and off the red carpet. She is a certainly a stand out fashion inspiration, but she’s also a role model for young women to pursue their dreams and be confident in their own skin which is why we love her!
Growing up was especially hard, she told Glamour Magazine in a recent interview, struggling with her hair texture, skin color, and weight, being confident everyday was a struggle. She found her confidence in acting and being able to let it all go on stage. Danielle pursued her dream by attending Juliard and performing in several plays after graduation. She landed the role on OITNB in 2013 as a 2 episode character and has become a much loved main character going into season 4 of the show. Then in 2014 became the first black character on the HBO Lena Dunham hit show Girls.

It doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all for this actress. Her next big gig is a role in the broadway revival The Color Purple as Sophia, alongside Jennifer Hudson and British actress Cynthia Erivo as the leads. On film she will be a voice actor in the upcoming animated Angry Birds alongside SNL Alumns. THEN this next month she is also the face of the #LoveYourShape Campaign with People Style Watch on Instagram. The campaign is encouraging all women to post their favorite body photos.
